Beyond the Screen: A Parametric Fusion of Cinema and Hi-Fi
When Jamie purchased his new home, it came with a dedicated home theater room already in place. However, there is a significant difference between a room that simply has speakers and a room that is engineered for sound.
We were invited to breathe new life into this space, transforming a standard "inherited" cinema into a high-performance sanctuary that serves two masters: the immersive impact of film and the delicate precision of a world-class two-channel Hi-Fi stereo system.
Engineering the "Lively" Soundstage
Most commercial cinemas are designed to be "dead"—heavily damped to the point where the room disappears entirely. But for a two-channel Hi-Fi setup, a room needs to breathe. It needs a soul.
To achieve this balance, we implemented a sophisticated multi-surface strategy:
Parametric Wave Wall Cladding (Side Walls): Running along both sides of the room, these stunning structures are the project's signature. By using a parametric "wave" design, we achieved a perfect marriage of absorption and diffusion. These walls scatter high-frequency energy to prevent harsh reflections while absorbing enough low-mid energy to keep the stereo imaging razor-sharp.
Acoustic Ceiling Panels: We treated the "fifth wall" with dedicated absorptive panels. By controlling vertical reflections, we managed to lower the noise floor and eliminate the "boxy" sound typical of smaller home theaters.
The Best of Both Worlds: Unlike traditional theaters that can feel claustrophobic, this combination of treatments makes the room feel larger than it is. The result is a "lively" acoustic environment—one where music feels vibrant and present, yet movie dialogue remains crystal clear.
The transformation moved the room from a static box to a dynamic stage. Whether it’s a vinyl record or a 4K blockbuster, the room now enhances the performance rather than competing with it.
