Why You Must Control Your Room's Sound

To achieve quality sound in any space—especially a recording or listening room—acoustic treatment is essential. But why is this the case? And is it enough to tile the walls with legendary paper egg trays? (Spoiler: absolutely not!)

The Problem: Uncontrolled Reflection

Sound waves constantly bounce back from the walls into the space, causing a distortion of what we hear. This phenomenon of reflected sound waves is called reverberation, which is the same as an echo in nature.

While our auditory organs use these reflections to perceive the size of a space, this influence is inappropriate when recording or critically listening. The aftermath of reflections will over-influence the pure sound coming from instruments. Worse yet, reflections at certain frequencies can either increase or decrease the volume of a given frequency in unwanted ways, which is disastrous for mixing or recording music.

The Solution: Absorption & Diffusion

To solve this, we must control the reflected sound. In acoustic treatment, we work not only with reflection but also with its absorption and diffusion.

• Absorption: Absorbent materials soak up sound energy and prevent it from reflecting back into the room.

• Diffusion: Diffusers fill the space with scattered sound waves without the unwanted, linear reflections you get from untreated walls.

However, our goal is not to completely get rid of reflected sound! We want to keep a reasonable amount of reverberation so the sound leads to great mixes and the room retains its essential liveliness.

For this reason, the best approach is to utilize a perfect duo:
